Presenting in Khmer and English: a practical guide
How to prepare a bilingual presentation that reads clearly in both languages, using Boldly for Khmer-ready text and SlideTell for the story.
Most presentation tools treat Khmer as an afterthought. If you work between Khmer and English — pitching a Cambodian client in the morning and an international partner in the afternoon — you have probably seen what that looks like: broken script, silent font substitutions, and “bold” text that loses the script entirely.
This guide collects what works for us when a presentation has to read clearly in both languages.
Start with one story, not two translations
A bilingual deck fails when each slide tries to carry both languages at full weight. Decide which language leads each audience, and keep the second one for the few lines that must be shared: the title, the key number, the call to action. One clear sentence in each language beats a slide of paired paragraphs.
Keep Khmer text in fonts that respect the script
Khmer needs fonts designed for its stacked consonants and vowel signs. When a tool substitutes a generic font, subscripts collide and readers notice immediately. Prepare and check your Khmer lines in Boldly, our free bold text generator: its formatted text mode uses Khmer-capable fonts, and its Unicode styles tell you when a style would not preserve the script, instead of quietly breaking it.
Give the slide more room than you think it needs
Khmer typically runs taller and slightly longer than the equivalent English. Leave vertical space, keep line height generous, and avoid squeezing bilingual labels into narrow columns. If a slide only works in one language, that is the slide telling you to split it.
Let the structure carry the meaning
The parts of a presentation that translate perfectly are structure and sequence: a clear opening, one idea per slide, a visible next step. That is the part SlideTell is built for — tell the story once, clearly, and the language on top of it has an easier job.
We build Mini Tech in Phnom Penh, so presentations that live in two languages are not an edge case for us. They are the job.
